The Bristol 40 is designed to sleep a total of six persons: Two forward in the V-berth, two on the port settee/dinette that converts to a double, one on the starboard settee and one in the aft quarter berth. Conveniently, the head can be accessed from both the forward cabin as well as from the salon area. The galley is to starboard as you enter the salon from the cockpit. The nav station is directly across to port. There is extensive use of wood throughout the interior and the cabin sole is teak and holly. Headroom is 6'5". Light and ventilation are provided by ample opening ports, hatches and fixed ports throughout. Air Conditioning, installed after 2014, ensures the interior remains comfortable even in the hottest of climates.
The main cabin is spacious with beautiful teak and holly sole. The comfortable dinette with fold-down table converts to a double berth. Storage is abundant throughout including an integrated glass storage cabinet in the table, large chart drawer and compartments in the nav station and additional storage in the quarter berth.
The forward cabin is large and equipped with two V berths with storage above and below. A large hatch above provides natural light and ventilation.
The head has two doors, one leading to the forward cabin and one leading to salon. Hot and cold pressure water is available on the sink faucet and shower wand. Storage is provided in ten drawers and two linen shelves.
The walk-thru galley layout provides a nice working space away from the main companionway. Located aft to starboard. Features include:

In 1979, the original owner of s/v Marquesa purchased both a Hinckley B40 as well as Marquessa. As both designs have strong design features of their own the owner could not part with either and sailed both yachts for over 30 years. Marquessa was sailed for one month in Northern Michigan, every other year and consequently had approximately 18 months total sailing time when I purchased her. The remaining time, she was stored inside right next to her B40 sister. I am the second owner of this yacht. When I purchased the Bristol, she was in better condition than any boat, in any price range, on Yacht World at the time. She truly was and remains in Bristol yacht condition. As an avid collector of automobiles, vintage motorcycles and boats I have never seen anything in such beautiful original conditionShe was shipped to Maine in the spring of 2012.
Being a naval architect of twenty-five years, it is hard for me to let things beso I waded into a few projects in the spring of 2012 prior to her first launch into salt water.
- The first project was the cutlass bearing/ stuffing box replacement. Due to the long overhand in the stern, it is near impossible to work on the stuffing box with the engine installed. The original shaft is in perfect condition. While the engine was removed from the boat; we decided to go through it; a refreshing the following projects were completed on the Westerbeke 40 by a certified Westerbeke facility
- Rebuilt injection pump
- 4 new mounted feet and 2 new custom mounting brackets to better align the engine
- Every seal, gasket, o-ring etc. On any and all bolt on equipment was replaced
- Transmission was town down, serviced, clutch plates replaced
- New water pump
- New hoses
- New injectors
- Steam cleaned and 4 coats of Westerbeke Red applied
The above engine work cost approximately eight thousand dollars; the engine runs flawlessly and will provide a lifetime of good service if maintained.
- Marquesa had a small factory void just below the horizontal cut the manufacturer makes when modifying the sloop to be a centerboard. The void was not detected in the purchase survey, presented no problem for thirty years but I found the void when she arrived in Maine. The void (1 square x 1/8 deep) was repaired by a fiberglass repair facility; this void was below the waterline but did not need to be repaired. However, being a perfectionist I authorized the work @ over six thousand dollars to fix the thirty year old blemish.
Marquesa was then sailed three times in the fall of 2012 to tests the new systems.
- In the spring of 2013, the boat was moved to my shop where we began a major refit to a vessel that was almost in perfect to begin with...The following was completed from May to August of 2013. I would estimate that over 1,000 hours of labor were put into the work description following:
- New 8 HP Vetus Bow Thruster; we used the forward centerline water tanks to use a thruster room and installed an 8 diameter thruster that is double what is necessary for the vessel. She has a standalone battery and is charged off the high output Bomar Alternator. We also opted for the remote control so operating the thruster and maneuvering is now very easy.
- Teak All the teak, with the exception of the companion way boards was wooded and then five coats of French varnish was applied to the toe rail, coamings and eye brow. The teak had Cetol on it and the woodwork itself had never been wooded; consequently it looks factory fresh, the hand rails on the trunk top were oiled so as to provide a better grip when wet. Depending on the location of the boat; this will suffice for 1-2 more seasons and then top coats should be added.
- Deck fitting: Every fitting on the deck and toe rail was removed with the exception of the windlass. Every piece of equipment, winches, genny tracks, etc. was removed, rebuilt and had the following water proofing treatment:
i. Beveled the deck or wood with a ½ countersink to provide a pocket for the Butyl tape. This also prevents any cracking in the gel coat
ii. All mounting through bolt hardware is new 316 S/S
iii. All equipment was re-bedded with marine Butyle tape under the guidance of the only Marine Butyl tape importer in the US
iv. The Bristol 40 was originally bedded with Butyl tape and it provided thirty plus years of water proofing as there are no wet spots on the deck. Every hold in the boat is dry and will remain so for another thirty plus years. This project alone was in excess of 200 man hours.
v. This system is far superior to bedding compound and the boat is bone dry, including the bilge. The Butyl tape will last for thirty plus years.
vi. Garmin 741 touch screen, new Edison pedestal. Top of the line 741 touch screen with wind and pre-run for radar. I could not decide whether to put the radar dome on the back stay or mast so I delayed the project for the summer. Currently, the radar input has been run to the stern for a Questis type aft stay mount.
- The Bilge: The bilge was very clean to begin with, void of any mold or diesel fumes. However, time slowly degraded the various plumbing so every system was removed except for the feed and return from the heat exchanger to the hot water heater. After the boat was stripped, we spent days cleaning the interior of the hull every square inch was degreased and bleached multiple times. After the clean, the following work was completed:
i. Bilge Pumps: (1) ¾ 1500GPH bilge pump was installed and (1) 1-1/2 Whale cockpit pump was installed, including all new reinforced bilge plumbing.
ii. Shower Sump: The shower sump has new reinforced bilge plumbing from a new sump system. The new sump needs to have the intake plumbing run to the shower drain, a 3 run.
iii. Potable Water System: All the parts, including a 5 GPM pump, hoses, etc. have been purchased but the system needs to be hooked up.
- Sanitary System: The existing fiberglass sewage tank was cleaned and all new equipment has bbeen purchased for a USCG approved system. The entirely new system includes a new macerator pump, two new Y valves; all new top of the line 1-1/2 no odor hose and newly rebuilt Wilcox Crittenden Skipper II, never used since rebuilt and completely restored. Everything is in my shop to put together the best, more reliable system possible.
- Everything that came off the deck was rebuilt or purchased new as a result of the rebidding such as the winches, dorades, running lights and flag socket system.
- Mast: The mast had a complete service. Having been in fresh water its entire life and minimal sailing history; the mast and standing rigging are in top notch shape. The Genny and Main had new halyards this year. All new wiring, except that of the deck lights were run to the mast head and were encased in pipe insulation. New LED anchor light, VHF antenna, windex and wind instruments. Mast received four coats of wax prior to steeping this year. New mast boot; 100% water tight.
- General Exterior Condition: The hull and topsides were compounded and then we applied three coast of 100% carnauba wax. There are 6 small gel coat chips or voids which are all the damage or blemishes of 30 years. If these were fixed the hull would be near perfect. The original gel coat shines like Awlgrip. Condition 9.5/10
- General Interior Condition: Near perfect. I have done nothing to the interior except clean and oil the woodwork. It is virtually new and in better than any interior I have ever seen. Condition 9.5/10
I build this boat to be the best Bristol 40 in existence and Im VERY confident that it is.
